About Tony Anastasi
I work in a fashion glamour studio during the day, and freelance at night, I also do freelance band photography and run a custom made poster business which I hire models and MUAs for also.
I am interested in non-commercial work relating to artistic photography, mainly Portrait, Fashion, Glamour and Artistic Nudes. Mostly B&W fine art style. If you are interested in shooting with me on an "Art for art's sake" (TFP/TFCD) basis.
If your looking to update your images, and locally based, please get in touch, over 18s only, Melbourne Australia based.
Note to models: you have to ask yourself: Why would a photographer want to work with me? What makes me stand out? What makes me different? You need to find your 'thing!'.. So what's your Thing???
"Most of the girls I work with are just starting out. They cannot afford to pay a photographer to supply high quality images for a portfolio. Some of them have previously paid quite large sums of monety to dodgy 'agencies' for 'modelling courses', 'contracts' and photographs.
In my case, I offer a completely free service - and in many cases pay travel expenses.
Who benefits most? Its a partnership between the model and the photographer. Depending on the choice of photographer, the model will gain by having a new set of professional quality pictures for her portfolio.
The model stands to benefit because a well presented, regularly updated portfolio is her/his pictorial CV and should be his/her passport to work. From the models point of view, its important to choose an experienced photographer because you will learn from working with him or her, and will be sure of some great pictures.
The photographer also benefits by building up his or her portfolio and gets the chance to work with a new model and maybe gets the kind of shoot which is not in their normal sphere of work. But the photographer also has costs equipment, overheads and time. Time is the most important element because a really good photographer will spend a fair bit of time after the shoot processing the pictures through PhotoShop to present the highest quality images.
I know there is a view that models feel exploited by TFP, but the solution is very easy. Limit the number of free shoots and once you have a portfolio you're happy with, stop taking any more bookings. And only take on paid work - but you have to work at it - it's just not good enough to post your pictures on the net and expect the work to roll in.."
What Agencies like to see: Ideal Evaluation Photo's:
Portfolio Images
What Images should be in an aspiring model's portfolio?
1. Tight head shot, such as used in magazine covers or makeup ads. These photos are very closely cropped showing the face to the best advantage. They are meant to be very glamorous and the ones that have bare shoulders are often the most striking as there is little to compete with the face in the image.
2. Full length shots. This is to give the agency, ad directory and their clients an idea of your body type. So this pose should show your figure to best advantage. Look at ads for jeans to get an idea. This can be a jeans and tee shirt type of shot.
3. Formal wear. Dress to the nines with the best outfit you own or can borrow. Often in a portfolio you will see the formal wear juxtaposed with the girl next door jeans and tee shirt shot. These on facing pages can be quite a contrast.
4. Some good photos that can show your range. This is usually a mixed bag of photos of whatever you and the photographer can imagine. The idea is to look like several different people; the best models can do this very well. This somehow stops being important if you should ever become a "supermodel" as they get paid the really big money to look like who they really are.
5. Swimsuit shot. If you have both the body and a skilled enough photographer you can produce a really good shot. If your body is really good, you can go for a bikini, but for the most part, a one piece maillot tends to help most body types.
6. Specialty shots, such as lingerie. The same rules apply as for the swimsuit shot. Generally lingerie models tend to run have a bust of 34 to 36, A or B, and tend to be slender. It is odd though a girl can go to the beach or pose in the tiniest of bikinis, but will not pose in the less revealing lingerie. Make certain that the lingerie fits properly.
I also see nothing wrong with including a tasteful nude. Not the "men's magazine" type but the ones you see in cosmo and others for bath oils and similar products. Look at these ads to see what I mean. Nudity and semi-nudity are becoming very common in ads, so I don't think I am making a radical suggestion. You can watch some of the fashion shows and see semi-nudity on the fashion show runways. Get used to being nude in the model business, as the changing room at a fashion show is over flowing with people who are dressing you, undressing you, doing your hair, and makeup; so don't expect privacy. While you don't need nude images in your portfolio, if you have a good rapport with your photographer, I would say at least try. However, do not do nude work if the photographer makes you uneasy! You can also bring someone if you think that would help you or you can just wait until you actually get a real assignment through your agent and then plunge right in.
Good luck.
If you are sending in a compcard for an agency to evaluate, you will need:
At least 2 Photographs, Full Length Bikini or Lingerie standing shots, facing the camera. ((Fill the frame head to toe, You need a full length where your body shape is easily visible, not the latest style in baggy cargos).
At least 2 Photographs, Full Length Bikini or Lingerie standing shots, Facing away from the camera showing the back. (Fill the frame head to toe).
At least 2 Photographs, head and shoulders shots (close-ups). Show a SMILE in at least one of the shots.
A minimum of two expression shots. These shots will represent the type of Modelling you're interested in doing. These are posing shots and can be anything you feel comfortable with.
Smile more and Enjoy life,
Tony Anastasi.
